Now it is time to study some of the most basic teachings of the word of God. Some things in life are negotiable. We may negotiate or dicker when we buy a new car or an item at a flea market but the word of God is not negotiable. If we want to go to heaven, we must go God’s way. There is no other way.

The Bible speaks of two ways—the broad way (wide) and the strait way (narrow). Sinners are on the broad way and saints are on the narrow way. Read Matthew 7:13 and 14. Three is not a list of other ways we may choose to get to heaven. Jesus clearly tells us that He is the only way.

Read John 14:16 and fill in the blanks:

Jesus saith unto him, I am the _________, the __________, and the ___________: no man cometh unto _____________________, but by ______________.

The first basic teaching that we want to study is repentance. It is very important that we understand what it means to repent. To repent means to have a complete change of mind and heart about something. In the case of sin, it means being so sorry for it that we are willing to turn from it and turn to God.

Fill in the blanks. It is God’s will that everyone repent and forsake sin.

1. 2 Peter 3:9. The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some men count slackness; but is ________________ to us-ward, not willing that any _____________________, but that _____ should come to ________________.

2. When we repent of our sins, we must stop sinning.

John 8:11. And Jesus said unto her, neither do I _____________________: go, and _______________________.

1 John 3:6. Whosoever ________________ in Him _______________________, whosoever ____________________ hath not seen Him, neither ____________________ Him.

3. Jesus preached that men should repent.

Matthew 4:17. Form that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, ____________________: for the __________________________ is at hand.

4. John the Baptist told the people they must repent.

Luke 3:3. And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of _______________ for the ____________________________________________.

5. The Apostles told the people the same thing.

Acts 3:19. ________________________, and be _________________________, that your _________ may be ______________________.

6. Every one of us must repent if we desire to go to heaven. This is necessary because it is sin that separates us from god.

1 John 1:9. If we _____________________, He is faithful and just to _____________________, and to ____________________ us from all _______________.

This also lets us know that we do not have to confess our sins to any man. It is God who forgives. There is just one Person who can represent us before God.

1 Timothy 2:5. For there is one ______________, and one mediator (a go-between) between ______________________, the Man _____________________________.

7. Repentance takes in the fact that we must forgive everyone who has wronged us in any way.

Matthew 6:14 and 15. For if ye forgive men their ______________, your heavenly Father will also _________________. But if ye ________________ men their ___________________, neither will your Father __________________________________.

8. Repentance also requires that we must seek forgiveness of those whom we have wronged. This gives us a clear conscience before God and men.

Acts 24:16. And herein do I ______________________, to have always a conscience _____________________ toward, and toward ______________________________.

9. The results are worth it!

2 Corinthians 5:17. Therefor if any man be in _____________, he is a  __________________: old things are _________________________; behold, all things are ______________________.

10. The steps to repentance:

1.      Be so sorry for your sins that you are willing to forsake them never to sin again.

2.      Be willing to forgive those who have done wrong to you.

3.      Be willing to make things right with those to whom you have done wrong.

4.      Humbly confess to God that you are a sinner, that you are sorry for every sin you have ever committed.

5.      Ask Him to forgive you of your sins.

6.      Promise Him that by His help you will never sin again.

7.      Accept His forgiveness which makes you that new person in Him.

8.      This is called salvation, being born again, becoming a child of God, becoming a member of the family of God.

9.      From that day forward, walk in all the light of the word of god as He reveals it to you.

If you have not repented of your sins, today would be a good time to do it. Our death or the end of the world could find us unprepared. Heaven or hell is ahead for everyone of us. Are you ready for heaven?

None of these will save you:

1.      Good works

2.      Being baptized

3.      Being catechized

4.      Taking the Communion

5.      Or any things other than repentance of sins.
