Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3

CHAPTER 1

1 This is the worde of şe lorde whiche came vnto Sophonye the sonne of Chusi, the sonne of Gedoliah, şe sonne of Amariah the sonne of Hezekiah in the time of Iosiah the sonne of Amon kynge of Iuda.
2 I wyl gather vp all thynges in the lande (sayeth the Lorde)
3 I wyl gather vp man and beast: I wil gather vp the foules in the ayre and the fyshe in the sea (to the greate decaye of the wycked) and wyll vtterlye destroye the men out of the lande, sayeth the Lorde.
4 I wyll stretche oute myne hande vpon Iuda, and vpon all suche as dwell at Ierusalem. Thus wyll I rote oute the remnaunte of Baal from thys place, & the names of the Remurins and priestes:
5 yea and suche as vpon theyr house toppes worshyppe and bowe them selues vnto the host of heauen: whiche sweare by the Lorde, & by theyr Malchom also:
6 whiche starte a backe from the Lord, & neyther seke after şe Lorde, nor regarde him.
7 Be styll at the presence of the Lorde God, for the daye of the Lorde is at hande: yea the Lorde hath prepareth a slayne offerynge, and called hys gestes therto.
8 And thus shall it happen in the daye of the Lordes a slayneofferyng: I wyll vpset the prynces, the kynges chyldren, and all suche as were straunge clothynge.
9 In the same daye also wyll I vyset all those, that treade ouer the thresholde so proudely, which fyll theyr Lordes house with trobbery and falshede.
10 At the same time (saith the Lorde) there shalbe hearde a greate crye from the fyshporte and an howlyng from the other porte, and a greate murthur from the hylles.
11 Howle ye that dwell in the myll, for all the marchaunt people are gone, and al they that were laden with syluer, are roted oute.
12 At the same tyme will I seke thorowe Ierusalem with lanternes, and vpset them that contynue in theyr dregges, and saye in theyr hertes. Tushe, the Lorde wil do neyther good nor euyll.
13 Theyr goodes shalbe spoyled, and theyr houses layed waste: they shall buylde houses, and not dwel in them: they shal plant vyneyardes, but not drinck the wyne, therof.
14 For the greate daye of the Lorde is at hande, it is harde by, and commeth on a pace. Horryble is the tydynges of the Lordes daye, then shall the gyaunte crye oute:
15 for that daye is a daye of wrath, a daye of trouble and heuinesse, a daye of vtter destruccyon & mysery, a darcke & glomyng daye, a cloudy and stormy daye,
16 a daye of the noyse of trompettes & shawmes, agaynst the stronge cities & hye towres.
17 I wyl brynge the people into suche vexacyon, that they shal go aboute lyke blyndemen, because they haue synned agaynste the Lorde. Theyr bloude shalbe shed as the duste, & theyr bodyes as the myre.
18 Nether theyr syluer nor theyr golde shalbe able to delyuered them in şe wrothfull daye of the Lorde, but the whole lande shalbe consumed thorow the fyre of his gelousy: for he shall soone make cleane ryddaunce of all them that dwell in the lande.

CHAPTER 2

1 Come together & gather you, O froward people,
2 or şe thing go forthe that is concluded, & or the tyme be passed awaye as the duste: or the fearefull wrath of the Lorde come vpon you,
3 yea or the daye of the Lordes sore dyspleasure come vpon you. Seke the Lorde all ye meke herted vpon earth, ye that worcke after hys iudgemente, seke ryghtuousnesse: seke lowlynesse, that ye maye be defended in the wrothfull daye of şe Lorde.
4 For Gaza shal be destroyed, and Ascalon shall be layed waste. They shal caste oute Asdod at the noone daye, and Accaron shalbe pluckte vp by the rotes.
5 Wo vnto you that dwell vpon the sea cost ye murtherous people: the worde of the Lord shal come vpon you. O Canaan thou lande of the Phylistines, I wyl destroy the, so that there shall no man dwel in the any more:
6 and as for the sea coast, it shall be hyrdemens cotages & shepe foldes:
7 yea it shalbe a porcyon for suche as remayne of the house of Iuda, to fede there vpon. In the houses of Ascalon shall they reste towarde nyght: for the Lorde theyr God shal vpset them, & turne awaye theyr captyuyte.
8 I haue heard the despyte of Moab, & the blasphemyes of the chyldren of Ammon, howe they haue shamefullye intreated my people, and magnifyed them selues wythin the borders of theyr lande.
9 Therfore as truely as I lyue (sayeth the Lorde of hostes the God of Israel) Moab shalbe as Sodome, & Ammon as Gomorra: euen drye thorne hedges, salt pyttes and a perpetual wyldernes. The resydue of my folcke shall spoyle them the remnaunte of my people shall haue them in possession.
10 This shal happen vnto them for their pryde, because they haue dealte so shamefullye wyth the Lorde of hostes people, and magnified themselues aboue them.
11 The lorde shall be gryme vpon them, & destroy al the goddes in the lande. And al the Iles of the heathen shal worshippe him, euery man in hys place.
12 Ye Morians also shal perish with my swerd:
13 yea, he shall stretche oute his hande ouer the north, and destroye Assur. As for Niniue, he shall make it desolate, drye and waste.
14 The flockes & all the beastes of the people shall lye in şe middeste of it, pellicanes & storckes shall abyde in the vpperpostes of it, soules shall synge in the wyndowes, & rauens shall syt vpon the balckes, for the borders of Cedre shal be ryuen doune.
15 Thys is the proude and carelesse cytye, that sayde in her herte: I am, and there is els none. O how is she made so wast that the beastes lye therein? Who so goeth by mocketh her, and poynteth at her wyth hys fynger.

CHAPTER 3

1 Wo to the abhomynable, fylthy & cruell cytie:
2 whiche will not heart, nor be refourmed. Get trust is not in the Lord, neither wyll she holde her to her goo.
3 Her rulers within her are as roaryng lyons: her iudges are as wolues in the euenynge, which leaue nothynge behynde them tyll the morowe.
4 Her prophetes are lyght persones & vnfaythfull men: her priestes vnhalowe the Sanctuarye, and do wrong vnder the pretence of the lawe.
5 But the iuste Lorde that doth no vnryghte, was amonge them, euery morning shewynge them hys lawe clearlye, and ceased not. But the vngodlye wyll not learne to be ashamed.
6 Therfore wyll I rote out thys people, and destroye theyr towres: yea, and make theyr stretes so voyd, that no man shal go therin. Theyr cytyes shalbe broken doune, so that no bodye shall be lefte, nor dwell there anye more.
7 I sayde vnto them: O feare me, and be contente to be refourmed. That theyr dwellynge shulde not be destroyed, and that there shulde happen vnto them none of these thynges, wherewyth I shall vyset them. But neuertheles they stande vp earlye, to folowe the fylthynes of theyr owne ymagynacions.
8 Therfore ye shall wayte vpon me (sayeth the Lord) vntil the tyme that I stand vp: for I am determed, to gather the people & to bring the kingedoms together, that I may poure oute myne anger, yea, al my wrothfull displeasure vpon them. For all the worlde shalbe consumed wyth the fyre of my gelousy.
9 And then wyll I clense the lyppes of the people, şt they may euerychone call vpon the name of the Lord, and serue hym with one shulder.
10 Such as I haue subdued, and my chyldren also whome I haue scatred abroade, shall brynge me presentes beyond the waters of Ethiopia.
11 In that tyme shalte thou no more be confounded, because of all thy ymagynacyons, where thorow thou haddest offended me: for I wyll take awaye the proude boasters of thyne honoure from the, so that thou shalte no more tryumphe because of my holy hyll.
12 In the also will I leaue a small poore simple people, which shal trust in the name of the Lorde.
13 The remnaunt of Israel shal do no wyckednes, nor speake lyes, neyther shall there anye disceytful tunge be founde in theyr mouthes. For they shalbe fed, and take theyr reste, and no man shall make them afrayed.
14 Geue thankes O doughter Syon, be ioyfull O Israell, reioyce and be glad from thy whole herte, O doughter Ierusalem,
15 for the Lorde hath taken awaye thy punyshemente, and turned backe thyne enemyes. The kynge of Israell, euen the Lorde hymselfe is with the: so that thou nedest no more to feare any mysfortune.
16 In that tyme it shall be sayed to Ierusalem: feare not, and to Syon: let not thyne handes be slacke,
17 for the Lorde thy GOD is with the, it is he that hath power to saue: he hath a specyall pleasure in the, & a maruelous loue towarde the: yea, he reioyseth ouer the wyth gladnesse.
18 Suche as haue bene in heuynesse, wyll I gather together, and take out of thy congregacion: as for the shame & reprofe that hath bene layed vpon the, it shalbe farre from the.
19 And lo, in that tyme wyll I destroye all those that vexe the: I wyl helpe the lame, and gather vp the caste awaye: yea I wil get them prayse and honoure in all landes, where they haue bene put to shame,
20 At the same time wyll I brynge you in, and at the same tyme wyll I gather you. I wyll get you a name and a good reporte amonge al people of the earthe, when I turne back youre captyuyte before youre eyes, sayeth the Lorde.
