Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4

1 In the tyme when the Iudges iudged, there felle a darth in the land. Wherfore a certayn man of Bethlehem Iuda went for to soiourne in the countrey of Moab wyth his wyfe and two sonnes.
2 The name of the man was Elymelec, and his wyfe Noemi, and the names of his two sonnes were, Mahalon and Chilion and they were Ephraites, oute of Bethlehem Iuda. And when they came into the lande of Moab, they contynued there.
3 And Elemilec Noemies husbande dyed, and she remayned with her two sonnes,
4 which toke them wyues of the nacions of the Moabites: the ones name Orphah and the others Ruth. And when they had dwelleth there about a ten yere,
5 Mahalon and Chilion dyed also euen both two of them, so that the wyfe was lefte desolate of her two sonnes & of her husband therto.
6 Then she stode vp wt her doughters in lawe and returned from the countrey of Moab: for she had heard saye, beyng in the countrey of Moab, howe that the Lorde had visited his people and geuen them fode.
7 Wherfore she departed oute of the place where she was and her two doughters wyth her. And as they went by the waye returning vnto the land of Iuda,
8 Noemi sayd vnto her two doughters in lawe: go and returne eche of you vnto youre mothers house: the Lorde deale as kyndlye wyth you, as ye haue dealt wt the dead & with me.
9 And şe Lord geue you, that you maye fynde reast ether of you in the house of her husband: & so she kyssed them. Then they cryed & wepte
10 & sayd vnto her: we wil go with the vnto thy folke.
11 But Noemi said, turne again my doughters: for what cause would you go with me? thinke you that there be any more children in my bowelles, to be youre husbandes?
12 Turne again my doughters & go: for I am to olde to haue an husband. Yf I sayde I haue hope, also yf I toke a man this night, ye and though I had alreadye borne sonnes?
13 would ye tary after them, tyl they were of age? or would ye for them so long refrayne from takynge of husbandes? Not so my doughters: for it greueth me much for youre sakes, that the hande of the Lord is gone out against me.
14 Therwyth they cryed and wepte agayne how be it Orphah kissed her mother in lawe but Ruth aboade still by her,
15 then she sayd: se, thy syster in lawe is gone backe againe vnto her people & vnto her God: returne thou after her.
16 But Ruth saide: entreate me not to leaue the, and to returne from after the, for whether thou goest, I will go, & where thou dwelleste, there I wil dwelle: thy people are my people, and thy God is my God.
17 Where thou dyest, I wil dye, and there wilbe buried. The Lorde do so and so to me, excepte that death onlye departe the and me a sondre.
18 When she saw that she woulde nedes go with her, she left speakinge vnto her.
19 And so they went both together vntyll they came to Bethlehem. And when they were come to Bethlehem, it was noysed thorow al the cyty and the wemen sayde: is not this Noemi?
20 But she said vnto them, calle me not Noemi: call me Mara, for the almightye hath made me very bitter.
21 I went oute full: but the Lorde hath brought me home emptye. Why should ye then calle me Noemi: seyng şe Lord hath humbled me, & the almighty hath brought me vnto aduersite?
22 And the time when Noemi wyth Ruth the Moabitesse her doughter in lawe returned out of the countreye of Moab and came to Bethlehem, was in the begynning of barley harueste.

1 And Noemi had a kynsman of her husbandes, a man of mighte, of the kynred of Elimelec, named Booz.
2 And Ruth the Moabitesse sayd vnto Noemi, let me go to the felde and lease and gather eares, after whomsoeuer I fynde grace in his syghte. And she sayde vnto her: go my doughter.
3 And she wente and came and gathered after the harueste men, and her chaunse was that parte of the felde pertayned vnto Booz whyche was of the kynred of Elymelec.
4 And beholde, Booz came from Bethlehem, and sayde vnto the harueste men: the Lorde be wyth you. And they answered him, the Lord blesse the.
5 Then sayde Booz vnto the younge man that had the ouersyghte of the herueste men. Whose damosel is this?
6 And the young man, that was set to ouer se the herueste men answered and sayde: it is the Moabitish damosel, that came wyth Noemi oute of the countreye of Moab,
7 and she sayde, let me I praye the, lease and gather after the heruest men, the eares that remayne, and so she came and hath continued euen from the morninge vnto now, and taryed not longe in the house.
8 Then sayd Booz vnto Ruth: hearest thou my doughter, go to no nother felde together, neither go from hence: but abyde by my maidens.
9 Thyne eyes are on a felde that shalbe reped: go after şe maidens therfore, for I haue charged the young men, that they touche the not. Moreouer when thou arte a thryste, go vnto the vessels and dryncke of that whiche the laddes haue drawen.
10 Then she fell on her face, and bowed her selfe to the grounde and sayde vnto him: howe is it that I haue founde grace in thyne eyes, to know me, seyng: I am an alyaunt.
11 And Booz answered and sayd vnto her: al is tolde me, that thou hast done vnto thy mother in lawe sence the death of thine husband, howe thou haste lefte thy father and thy mother, and the lande where thou wast borne, & art come vnto a nacion, which thou kneweste not in time passed.
12 The Lord quite thy worck, & a full reward be geuen the of the Lord God of Israel vnto whom thou art come, to truste vnder hys winges.
13 Then she sayd vnto him: let me finde fauoure in thy sighte my Lorde, for thou hast comforted me, & hast spoken hertely vnto thy maide, which yet can not be like vnto one of thy maides.
14 And Booz when the tyme of refeccion was come, saide vnto her: come hether & eate of the bread, & dippe thy soppe in the vinagre. And she sat doune by şe repers, & he raught her parched corne. And so she did eate & was suffised & left part.
15 And when she was rysen vp together, Booz sayde to the younge men sayinge: let her gather the eares that remaine, & do her no despite.
16 And herto pul out of the sheues for her, & let it lie, that she maye gather it vp, & rebuke her not.
17 And so she gathered vntill euen & then thresshed that she had gathered, & it was vpon an Epha of barleye.
18 And she toke it vp & went to the city, & shewed her mother in law what she had gathered. And therto she plucked oute, & gaue to her that she had reserued when she had eaten ynough.
19 Then sayd her mother in lawe vnto her, where gatherest thou to daye? and where wroughteste thou? blessed be he that knewe the. And she shewed her mother in law wt whom she had wroughte & saide: the mannes name wt whom I wrought to day is Booz.
20 Then saide Noemi vnto her doughter in law: blessed be he for he ceaseth not to do şe same goodnesse to the dead, şt he did to the lyuynge. And Noemi said vnto her: şe man is nye vnto vs, euen of our next kinne.
21 And Ruth şe Moabite said: he bad me also, şt I should continew with his young men, vntil they had ended al şe heruest he hath.
22 Then said Noemi vnto Ruth her doughter in law, it is best my doughter that thou go oute wyth his maiden, and that no no man mete the in any other felde.
23 And so she kept her by the maydens of Booz, together vnto şe ende of barley haruest & of whete heruest also: and dwelt with her mother in law.

1 Then Noemi her mother in law sayd vnto her: my doughter I wil seke reast for the, that thou maieste be in better case.
2 For now this Booz oure kynsman with whose maydens thou waste, wenoweth his barley to nyght in the thresshinge floure,
3 washe thy selfe therfore & anoynte the, & put thy rayment vpon the, and get the to the tresshinge floure. But let not the man beware of the, vntil he haue left eatyng and drinckyng.
4 And when he goeth to slepe, marcke the place where he layeth him doune, and then go and lyfte vp the clothes that are on his fete, and laye the doune, and so shall he tell the what thou shalt do.
5 And she answered her: al şt thou byddest me I wyl do.
6 And she went vnto the floure, and dyd accordynge to al that her mother in lawe bade her.
7 And when Booz had eaten and droncken, and made hym merye, he went and lay doune by the syde of the heape. And she came softlye, and lyfte vp the clothes of hys fete, and layde her doune.
8 And at mydnyght the man was afrayd and groped. And beholde, a woman laye at his fete.
9 Then he sayde: what art thou? and she answered, I am Ruth thyne handmayde, sprede thy mantell ouer thyne handmayde, for thou art the next of the kynne.
10 And then he sayde: blessed be thou in the Lorde my doughter, for thou haste shewed more goodnesse in şe later end, then at the beginning, in as much as thou folowedeste not young men, whether they were poore or riche.
11 And now my doughter, feare not, I wyl do to şe al that thou requireste, for al the gates of my people knowe that thou art a woman of vertue.
12 And is true that I am of thy nexte kynne: how be it, there is one nyer then I.
13 Tary al nyght. And when mornynge is come yf he wyll marye the: it is good, so let hym do. But and yf he wyl not haue the as sure as the Lord liueth, I wil haue the, lye still vntyll the morning. And so she laye at his fete vntil the morninge.
14 And she arose vp before one could knowe another. And he said: let no man beware, that there came any woman into the thresshing floure.
15 And he sayd: bring thy mantel şt thou hast vpon the & behold it vp. And she helde it vp. And he mette in syxe measures of Barleye and laied it on her. And she gat her into the cytye:
16 & she came into her mother in lawe, which sayde: what tidinges my doughter? And she tolde her all that the man had done to her.
17 And saide therto, these syxe measures of barlye gaue he me and sayde: thou shalt not go emptye vnto thy mother in law.
18 Then sayde she: my doughter syt still, vntyll thou knowe howe the matter wyll chaunse. For the man wil not be in reast vntil he haue fynished the matter this same daye.

1 Then went Booz vnto the gate and sat him doune there: and beholde, the kinsman of which Booz spake, came by. Vnto whom he sayde: come and sytte doune here, and called him by his name. And he turned in and sat doune.
2 Then he toke ten men of the elders of the cyty and said, syt ye doune here. And they sat doune.
3 Then he sayde vnto the kynsman: Noemi that is come againe out of the countreye of Moab, will selle a parcell of lande, which was oure brother Elimelecs.
4 And I thought to do the to wete and bidde şe bye it before the enhabitoures and elders of my people, yf thou be disposed to calenge it: but and yf thou wilt not purchase it, then tell me that I maye wete it. For there is none to calenge it saue thou, and I nexte the. And the other answered, I wyl purchase it.
5 Then sayde Booz, what daye thou byeste the feld of the hand of Noemi, thou must take also Ruth the Moabyte the wyfe of the death to stere vp the name of the deed vpon his enheritaunce.
6 Then sayde the kynsman: I can not purchase it for marring of myne own enheritaunce: take thou my ryghte to the, for I cannot purchase it.
7 Now this was the maner of olde tyme in Israell concerninge purches and chaunging, for to stablyshe al thing: that a man must plucke of his showe and geue it hys neyghboure, and thys was a wytnesse in Israel.
8 And the kinsman saide to Booz, bye it thou: and so drue of his showe.
9 Then sayd Booz vnto the elders, and vnto all the people: ye are witnesses this day, that I haue bought al that was Elimelecs, and al that was Chilions & Mahelons, of the hand of Noemi.
10 And moreouer Ruth the Moabite the wyfe of Mahelon, do I take vnto me to wife, to stere vp the name of the deed vpon his enheritaunce, that his name be not put out from amonge his brethren, and from the gate of hys cytye: ye are wytnesses this daye.
11 And al the people that were in the gate, & the elders said: we are witnesses: the Lorde make the woman that is come into thine house lyke Rahel & Lea, which twayne dyd builde the house of Israel: that she maye do vertuously in Ephrathah, & be famouse in Bethlehem,
12 and that thyne house be like the house of Pharez, whom Thamar bare vnto Iuda, euen of the seed, which the Lorde shall geue the of this young woman.
13 And so Booz toke Ruth, and she was his wyfe. And he went in vnto her, and the Lord gaue that she conceyued and bare a sonne.
14 And the wemen saide vnto Noemi: blessed be the Lorde, the which hath not lefte the wythout an heyre this day that shal haue a name in Israel,
15 and that shal bring thy lyfe agayne and cherishe thine olde age. For thy doughter in law, which loueth the, hath borne him that is better to the then seuen sonnes.
16 And Noemi toke the childe and layed it in her lappe, & became nourse vnto it.
17 And her neyghbours gaue it a name sayinge: there is a childe borne to Noemi, and called it Obed: he is the father of Isai, the father of Dauid.
18 This is the generacyon of Pharez, Pharez begat Hezron,
19 Hezron begat Ram, Ram begat Aminadab,
20 Aminadab begat Nahason, Nahason begat Salmon,
21 Salmon begat Booz, Booz begat Obed,
22 Obed begat Isai, Isai begat Dauid.
