Chapter 1 Chapter 2

1 In the seconde yeare of Kynge Darius, in the .vi. moneth, the first day of the moneth, came the worde of the Lorde (by the Prophete Aggeus) vnto Zorobabel že sonne of Salathiel the prynce of Iuda, and to Iesua the sonne of Iosedech the hye prieste, sayinge:
2 Thus speaketh the Lord of hostes, and sayeth: This people doth saye: The tyme is not yet come to buylde vp the Lordes house.
3 Then spake the Lord by the Prophete Aggeus, and sayde:
4 Ye your selues can fynde tyme to dwell in syled houses, and shall thys house lye waste?
5 Consydre nowe youre owne wayes in youre hertes (sayth the Lorde of hostes)
6 ye sowe muche, but ye bryng lytle in: ye eate, but ye haue not ynoughe: ye drincke, but ye are not fylled, ye decke youre selues, but ye are not warme: and he that earneth any wage, putteth it in a broken purse.
7 Thus sayeth the Lorde of hostes: Consydre your owne wayes in your hertes,
8 get you vp to the mountayne, fetche wood, and buyld vp the house, that it maye be acceptable vnto me, and that I maye shewe myne honoure, sayeth the Lorde.
9 Ye loked for much, and lo, it is come to lytle: & thoughe ye bryng it home, yet do I blowe it awaye. And why so, sayeth the Lorde of hostes? Euen because that my house lyeth so waste, and ye runne euery man vnto hys owne house.
10 Wherfore the heauen is forbidden to geue you anye dewe, and the earthe is forbidden to geue you encrease.
11 I haue called for a drouthe, both vpon the lande & vpon the mountaynes, vpon corne, vpon wyne, & vpon oyle, vpon euery thynge that the grounde bryngeth forth, vpon men and vpon catell, yea and vpon all handy laboure.
12 Now when Zorobabel the sonne of Salathiel, and Iesua the sonne of Iosedech the hye priest with the remnaunte of the people, heard the voyce of the Lorde theyr God, and že wordes of the Prophete Aggeus (lyke as že lorde theyr God hath sent him) the people dyd fear the Lorde.
13 Then Aggeus the Lordes angell sayde in the Lordes message vnto the people: I am wyth you, sayeth the Lorde.
14 So že Lorde waked vp the spryte of Zorobabel the prince of Iuda, and the sprete of Iesua the sonne of Iosedech the hye priest, and the sprete of the remnaunte of all the people: that they came, and laboured, in the house of the Lorde of Hostes theyr God.
15 (2:1) Vpon the .xxiiij. daye of the sixte moneth, in the seconde yeare of Kyng Darius,

1 (2:2) the .xxi. daye of the seuenthe moneth, came the worde of the Lorde vp the prophete Aggeus, saying:
2 (2:3) speake to Zorobabel the sonne of Salathiel prince of Iuda, and to Iesua the sonne of Iosedech the hye priest, & to the resydue of the people, and saye:
3 (2:4) Who is lefte amonge you, that sawe this house in her fyrste beutye? But what thinck ye now by it? Is it not in your eyes, euen as though it were nothynge?
4 (2:5) Neuerthelesse be of good chere O Zarobabel (sayeth the Lorde) be of good comforte, O Iesua thou sonne of Iosedech hye pryest: take good hertes vnto you also, all ye people of the lande, sayeth the Lorde of hostes
5 (2:6) and do accordynge to the worde (for I am wt you, sayeth the Lorde of hostes) lyke as I agreed wyth you, when ye came oute of že land of Egypte: and my spryte shalbe among you, feare ye not.
6 (2:7) For thus sayth the Lorde of hostes: yet ones more wyll I shake heauen and earthe, the sea and the drye lande:
7 (2:8) yea, I will moue al heathen, & the comforte of all Heathen shall come, and so wyll I fyl thys house wyth honoure, sayeth the Lorde of hostes.
8 (2:9) The syluer is myne, and the gold is myne, sayth the lord of hostes.
9 (2:10) Thus the glorye of the last house shalbe greater then the fyrste, sayeth že Lorde of hostes: and in this place will I geue peace, sayeth the Lorde of hostes.
10 (2:11) The .xxiiij. daye of the .ix. moneth in the seconde yeare of kynge Darius, came the word of the Lorde vnto the Prophete Aggeus, sayinge:
11 (2:12) Thus sayeth the Lorde GOD of hostes: Aske the priestes concerninge the lawe, & saye:
12 (2:13) yf one beare holye flesh in his cote lappe, and with his lappe do touche the bread, potage, wyne, oyle, or anye other meate: shall he be holye also? The priestes answered & sayde: No.
13 (2:14) Then sayde aggeus: Nowe yf one being defyled with a dead carcase, touche anye of these: shall it also be vncleane.
14 (2:15) The Pryestes gaue answers, & sayd: yea, it shalbe vncleane. Then Aggeus answered, and sayde: euen so is thys people & this nacyon before me, sayth the Lord: & so are al the worckes of theyr handes, yea, and all that they offre, is vncleane.
15 (2:16) And now (I praye you) consydre from thys daye forthe, and howe it hath gone wyth you afore: or euer there was layed one stone vpon another in the temple of the Lorde,
16 (2:17) that when ye came to a corne heape of .xx. bushels, there were scarce ten: and that when ye came to the wyne presse for to powre oute .C. pottes of wyne, there were scarce .xx.
17 (2:18) For I smote you wyth heate, blastynge and hayle stones in all the labours of your handes: yet was there none of you, that wolde turne vnto me, sayth the Lorde.
18 (2:19) Consydre then from thys daye forth and afore, namely, from the .xxiiij. daye of the .ix. moneth, vnto the daye that the foundacion of the Lordes temple was layed: marck it wel
19 (2:20) is not the sede yet in the barne? haue not the vines, the fyggetrees, the pomgranates, & oliue trees bene yet vnfrutefull? but from this day forth, I shall make them to prospere.
20 (2:21) Moreouer the .xxiiij. daye of the moneth came the worde of the Lorde vnto Aggeus agayne, sayinge:
21 (2:22) Speake to Zorobabel the prynce of Iuda, and saye: I wyll shake bothe heauen and earthe,
22 (2:23) and ouerthrowe the seat of the kyngedomes, yea; & destroye the myghtye kyngedome of the heathen. I wyll ouerthrow the charettes, and those that syt vpon them, so that both horse and man shall fall doune, euerye man thorowe hys neyghbours swearde.
23 (2:24) And as for the, O Zorobabel (sayeth the Lord of hostes) thou sonne of Salathiel my seruaunt: I wil take the (sayeth the Lord) at the same tyme, and make the as a seale, for I haue chosen the, saith the Lord of hostes.
