Lesson 5 God The Creator Of All Things

Devotional Reading:   Psalm 148:1–6.

Memory Verse:           Genesis 1:1.

In the beginning god created the heaven and the earth.

LESSON TEXT

Genesis 1:1–3. In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. 2And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. 3And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

Genesis 1:9–11. And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so. 10And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good. 11And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.

Genesis 1:20, 21. And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. 21And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

Genesis 1:24–28. And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so. 25And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good. 26And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 27So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. 28And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

COMMENTS ON THE LESSON TEXT

Genesis 1:1–3. God is declared to be the creator. The date of creation is fixed as “in the beginning.” The earth was, at first, in a chaotic state. The first thing created by God was light.

Genesis 1:6–10. The organization of the earth is here described. The chaotic mass is given form. V11. We here have the creation of vegetation. This is the first life to appear on earth.

Genesis 1:20, 21. The origin of animal life is here given; first the fish, then the fowls.

Genesis 1:24–25. The origin of land animals is given next. In this as, as with all previous life, the law of species is clearly stated.

Genesis 1:26–28. Man is the crowning glory of creation. He is in God’s image and has dominion over the rest.

LESSON TOPIC: GOD, THE CREATOR OF ALL THINGS

Definition. Creation means the bringing of things into existence. Science can neither prove nor disprove the matter was created out of nothing. The original chaos was created out of nothing. The original chaos is formed into an orderly system.

I. GOD THE CREATOR

1. The Bible teaching.

The Bible distinctly informs us that God is the creator of all things. It is said of Christ, “All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.” (John 1:3) “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in the earth . . . all things were created by him, and for him.” (Colossians 1:16)

2. The testimony of reason.

II. THE AGREEMENT OF SCIENCE

1. The days of creation.

The conclusions of science disagree with the idea that the world was created in six literal days. We are under no necessity of making these days consist of 24 hours.

2. The order of creation.

The Mosaic order of creation presents fist the formation of matter in a chaotic state. Next the organization of the earth with its seas, continents, etc. Then vegetation, sea animals, fowls, land animals and, lastly, man. Science has discovered much of this in comparatively recent years.

III. THE THEORY OF EVOLUTION

The Bible assigns the entire work of creation to God. Because science had disproved some of the interpretations place upon the Bible, men have discarded the whole account and are left to look elsewhere for an explanation.

1. The theory.

The theory (and it is only a theory), ascribes eternity to matter and asserts that all life comes from resident forces in matter. A noted evolutionist said, “Emotion, intellect, will, and all their phenomena, were once latent in a fiery cloud.” A modified evolution gives a few created forms to begin with then leaves evolution to do the rest. Darwin was of this class. Others make room for occasional miracles and acts of creation which is a virtual surrender of the theory.

2. The basic facts.

Certain facts are used as a basis of the doctrine of evolution. A) A progressive appearance of life science has proved that all life did not appear on the earth at the same time. B) Similarity of the various species, there is nothing to show that God did not make them all. C) The presence of useless organs. It is claimed that some of the higher organisms, such as man, possesses, useless organs. We are not so sure they are useless.

IV. DIFFICULTIES OF EVOLUTION

1. The inertia of matter.

A stone is powerless to move itself from its position. It is an inert object.

2. Spontaneous generation.

The theory explains that life has come spontaneously from the non-living. This is contrary to every known fact.

3. Formation of new species.

Evolution assumes that new species have developed from others. Varieties have been produced within the species, as different breeds of cattle, horses, chickens, etc. Where offspring has resulted from such a cross, like the mule, the new variety is incapable of propagation. All scientific evidence testifies to the immutability of God’s law, “after his kind.”

4. No fossils for intermediate forms.

Diligent search has been made for the “missing link,” but it is still missing. When they find a bone or a skull, they immediately give it an immense age, but it is all guesswork.

V. THE ORIGIN OF MAN

The Bible account. The Bible declares that God made man in his own image. The physical man is not related to the beast as the law of species and the creation of Eve clearly shows. Man also has a soul. The lowest savage is capable of religious instruction, and conversion, while the highest animal has no capacity whatever for religious or moral ideas.
